Do You Need a Home Battery with Solar?

A battery can be valuable for backup, energy timing, or both—but those are different benefits and should be evaluated separately.

You do not automatically need a battery

Grid-connected solar can operate without storage and reduce electricity purchases during daylight hours. A battery becomes worth evaluating when outages matter, evening electricity is expensive, export credits are weak, or the household wants greater control over when solar is used.

Start with the problem you want the battery to solve. 'Because everyone includes one' is not a design requirement.

Backup power is a system design, not just a battery purchase

During an outage, standard grid-tied solar usually shuts down for worker safety. A backup system needs compatible batteries, controls, and a protected-load or whole-home configuration. Capacity and power are different: capacity affects how long loads run; power affects which loads can start or operate together.

List critical loads—refrigerator, lights, internet, medical equipment, well pump, HVAC—and ask for an outage simulation. Whole-home backup may still require automatic load management.

How storage may change the bill

A battery can store lower-value midday solar and discharge in the evening, reducing grid purchases and low-value exports. Under California net billing, that timing can improve the value of solar production.

The result depends on utility rate, household load shape, battery control settings, usable capacity, round-trip efficiency, degradation, reserve level, and system price. Compare modeled annual savings with and without storage.

How to think about battery size

Review usable kWh, continuous and peak kW, allowed depth of discharge, warranty throughput or retention, inverter compatibility, expansion options, and whether the system can recharge during an extended outage.

A larger battery is not automatically better. Oversizing can leave expensive capacity unused; undersizing can fail to support the loads that motivated the purchase.

A practical decision test

Price the battery separately. Estimate its incremental bill savings, then identify the personal value of backup. Review warranty, expected service, installation scope, electrical upgrades, and replacement risk. Ask what happens when the battery is full, empty, offline, or reserved for outages.

Choose storage when the combined financial and resilience value is worth the added cost—not because the proposal hides it inside one payment.
