There is no universal yes or no

Solar can reduce exposure to utility purchases, turn roof space into productive infrastructure, and pair with storage for resilience. It also brings upfront or contractual cost, roof and equipment constraints, long-term obligations, and uncertain forecasts.

The right question is: does this specific system, at this price and under this contract, fit this home and the owner's likely future? Separate the technology from the deal.

The strongest potential advantages

Well-sited solar can reduce grid electricity purchases for many years. Ownership can provide relatively predictable energy production after the initial investment. A battery can add backup and time-shifting. Electrification plans—such as an EV or heat pump—may make onsite generation more useful.

These advantages depend on production, rate rules, system price, self-consumption, maintenance, and how long the owner benefits. None should be stated as a guarantee.

The tradeoffs homeowners should not ignore

Solar may be weak for a heavily shaded or failing roof, unusually low usage, an imminent move, or a high-priced contract. Financing adds interest and fees. Leases and PPAs can complicate a sale. Equipment can fail, monitoring needs attention, and roof work after installation costs more.

Policy, rates, incentives, insurance, and export compensation can change. Use conservative scenarios and keep a financial buffer rather than treating the proposal as risk-free.

A five-part worth-it test

First, verify site fit: roof life, shade, structure, service panel, and usable area. Second, verify energy fit using 12 months of bills and documented future loads. Third, verify economics using cash price, financed total, remaining utility bill, and conservative production. Fourth, verify the contract, warranties, service, and sale process. Fifth, verify personal fit: budget, outage priorities, and expected ownership period.

If any one area is unclear, pause. A good project remains understandable after the sales meeting.

Red flags that justify walking away

Be cautious with claims of free solar, guaranteed zero bills, urgent same-day signatures, missing cash price, unexplained tax assumptions, unrealistic rate escalation, vague equipment, no site-specific production model, or refusal to provide the full contract in advance.

Compare at least two or three proposals on the same assumptions. A trustworthy advisor should be comfortable explaining where solar may not fit.
